Why Los Blancos Possess 'Complete Faith' in Teenager Pitarch

The teenager has featured in seven games for Real Madrid, featuring five starts.

When an teenage creates Real Madrid a historic moment in a crucial Champions League tie against Manchester City, it inevitably draws praise and attention.

In only his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the team - the young midfielder suitably impressed as the 15-time Champions League winners claimed a 3-0 last-16 first leg lead at the Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also made his Real debut in the play-off round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then helped Los Blancos defeat the English Premier League side in the midweek return to secure a quarter-final place.

At 18 years old, Pitarch became the club's youngest player to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing Brazil forward Vini Jr's previous mark by 10 days.

Rapid Ascent From La Fabrica

This talent is the latest to emerge from the club's academy and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most promising young players.

He joined Madrid from CD Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe academies, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a strong impression.

Pitarch worked his way up to the B team and it was during a friendly match in which they played against the academy's first team, then coached by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who replaced the previous coach in January.

Spanish media would later label the moment as "love at first sight," adding Pitarch stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, personality and drive he brought to the side.

'His Greatest Quality Is His Character'

In the summer of 2025, ex-manager Xabi Alonso called up Pitarch to practice with the first team and awarded him minutes in pre-season.

However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the defining moment in his career as he was introduced as a late substitute in both ties against Benfica that set up the meeting with Manchester City.

"I've dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the first day I started playing football, each day you head to training and every day you play a match," said the player following his first appearance.

"I've just achieved my ambition with the greatest club in the planet and in the top tournament."

Given a first start in the Spanish league against his former club - where he spent four years after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the following four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opportunity.

Pitarch has taken it with displays that have defied his age and experience.

"He is a very quick footballer, and you can observe his capabilities," remarked Arbeloa. "He is incredibly dynamic, with great endurance, effort and movement."

Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his manager.

"His greatest quality is his character," added Arbeloa. "He always wants the possession, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.

"I realize fans might be surprised to watch him make his debut in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had total confidence in him to perform his normal game.

"He will keep receiving chances with the first team. It's a pleasure to have a player like him."

A Future International Decision

Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up deeply involved in Spanish football, progressing through local academies before joining the club's famous youth academy.

He possesses dual Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, offering him the choice to play for both nations at senior international level.

Under international regulations, footballers may represent multiple nations at youth level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only final once they appear in a competitive full international.

He has played for the Spanish national team at youth level, representing both the U19 and under-20 sides, and participated in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja made it to the quarter-finals.

Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to either senior national team, who are monitoring his progress with keen attention.

In a recent interview, Pitarch said: "I haven't made my ultimate choice so far. Things are positive with Spain, but I will reach a conclusion in the near future."

His situation echoes that of other bi-national talents such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Yamal chose Spain, Diaz opted to represent Morocco.

Focus on the Future

For now, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and rewarding Arbeloa's faith.

He featured for over an hour in the two-one victory at City, which sealed a five-one overall triumph and a quarter-final matchup with the German champions.

His substitution by another academy player in Manuel Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in younger players to help the team chase future success.

After his impressive impact so far on the Champions League, Pitarch is expected to be a central figure in that.

"The manager handles me the identical way. We deal with it very normally. I attempt not to think about it too much - I have to earn my playing time on the field," he commented after the win at Manchester.
