The Legendary Jimmy Cliff, Music Superstar and Cultural Icon, Dies at Eighty-One Years of Age
The world grieves the loss of the iconic Jimmy Cliff, the celebrated Jamaican-born musician and actor whose distinctive voice played a key role in popularizing the reggae genre worldwide. He passed away at the age of 81.
“With deep sorrow that I announce that my beloved husband, Jimmy Cliff, has passed away due to a seizure episode and subsequent pneumonia,” posted his spouse Latifa on Instagram. “I am thankful for his family, close friends, peers in the arts and coworkers who walked with him on his journey. To all his supporters around the world, please know that your support was his strength during his whole career … Jimmy, my dear, may you rest in peace. I will honor your wishes.” The message was also signed by their children, Lilty and Aken.
Cliff gained fame for hit songs such as You Can Get It If You Really Want, I Can See Clearly Now and Wonderful World, Beautiful People. His optimistic sound and positive temperament brought him a large and loyal fanbase.
Beyond his musical accomplishments, Cliff took the lead role in the 1972 crime drama The Harder They Come, a role that was highly acclaimed and is viewed as a cornerstone of film in Jamaica.
Jimmy Cliff is among the select few of musicians, including Bob Marley and other greats, to be awarded the esteemed Jamaican Order of Merit.
