The Grisly Animated Film Conclusion That Haunts Audiences
Among every mature animated films I’ve personally viewed, nothing has remained with me as much as the terror-laced ending of a viscerally violent and deeply subversive film from 2022 Unicorn Wars.
Back in 2015’s, this Spain-based writer-director developed a dark, bleak and often savage world that included a few small , forlorn hints of optimism.
Although The Unicorn Wars feels like it originated from a desire to push animation even more, the director clarified that it was rather an effort to express a global, multicultural theme regarding “the mutual source of all wars.”
That idea is conveyed by means of a band of vividly colored bears , obviously inspired by a well-known series of cuddly characters.
Maturing in a society built around warmongering and the military-industrial complex, numerous these animals are consumed by killing unicorns, due to a holy book that claims the bears they previously were masters of the forest, until these creatures expelled them.
A few have not completely bought into the propaganda, , would rather experiment with narcotics and fornicate in the woods.
Unlike their cuddly counterparts, these colorful critters display genitals , clear sex drives.
For a certain notably brutal, skeptical animal, the bear named Bluey, the conflict with the unicorns turns into a road toward dominance — and particularly to authority above his gentler, nicer brother the character Tubby.
This bear is a bully , an obvious sociopath , and as terror takes over his group and takes his teammates sequentially, he takes more and more power for himself, through ever more gory, harmful methods.
At the same time, the horned creatures are suffering their own nightmare, as an expanding, harmful creature in their habitat.
“At the beginning, it seems like a comedy,” the director stated. “Yet it becomes a more serious and sorrowful film. And in the finale, it transforms into a scary feature.”
The Unicorn Wars commences resembling one of the most playful movies by a legendary filmmaker, that uncover a mischievous joy in allowing animated figures curse, fire weapons, or have intimate relations.
Then it becomes something more like a bleaker movie from the same creator, including ever more visual gore and a tangible relation to genuine tragedy of conflict.
By the end, it is a full-on extreme drama massacre.
The horror which makes the film a perfect Halloween movie starts well before than one might expect.
Unicorn Wars is suited for the hardcore gorehounds, for fans of graphic films who wish to watch a movie they have not watched previously, and can endure a plot that pulls absolutely no punches.
View it with the lights off free from interruptions, and the finale will burrow under your skin and take up residence there.
