Taliban Utilized Discarded UK Equipment to Locate Local Nationals That Served Alongside Allied Troops, Investigation Is Told

A whistleblower has disclosed a parliamentary probe that British authorities abandoned classified equipment allowing the militant group to track down local individuals that had served with western forces.

Information Leak Endangers Numerous in Danger

The whistleblower, called Person A, stated that individuals impacted by the information breach were advised to change residences and alter their contact details to avoid detection from the Taliban.

Lawmakers are investigating the Conservative government's management of a catastrophic leak of personal details concerning nearly 19,000 individuals who had applied to come to the United Kingdom to escape the regime.

How the Leak Happened

An electronic document containing confidential details, comprising identities, contact details and sometimes relative details, was accidentally leaked by a staff member working at special operations center in February 2022.

The leak came to light months later, when the names of multiple applicants who had sought to settle in Britain appeared on online platforms.

Many believe there's a false assumption that the Taliban are without the same sort of facilities that western nations possess,” Person A informed MPs.

“We left it all behind in Afghanistan; they have it. Once they acquire your phone number, they can locate your exact position. That is what intelligence groups did.”

During testimony about whether the Taliban had access to advanced decryption, the whistleblower stated: “They have complete capability.”

Impact of the Security Lapse

Preliminary research submitted to the investigation estimated that at least 49 family members and associates of Afghans affected by the incident had been executed.

A superinjunction concerning the incident was put in force in late 2023 and restricted any information regarding the matter from being made public until July 2025.

Security Recommendations

Given injunction limitations, the source and the volunteer organization associated with advised affected households they were supporting that they had “suspicions that mobile communications had been breached”.
