Sovereign to Deliver First-Hand Address on His Health Battle in TV Address

His Majesty has taped a intimate address concerning his journey with cancer, which will be broadcast as part of this year's fundraising drive, organised by medical research organisations and a television broadcaster.

The royal household said the King would talk about his "recovery journey" as a cancer patient, in a video message on Friday evening at 8pm UK time.

The address, recorded at his London residence a fortnight ago, will highlight the importance of preventative health checks to increase the likelihood more people diagnose the disease at an initial point.

This represents a rare update on the medical condition of the King, who has been undergoing regular treatment since the news was shared in February 2024. However, it is believed doubtful the King will disclose his specific form of cancer.

The Campaign's Central Purpose

The Stand Up To Cancer campaign each year collects money for clinical trials and patient care and prompts people to get health assessments to boost the chances of an timely detection.

The King's relative openness about his illness, and his experience as a patient, has been intended to promote education and to persuade more people to get tested - and this will be advanced with this unique personal contribution.

Up until now the King's key philosophy to his cancer has been to maintain his duties, preserving a hectic timetable despite his ongoing course of therapy, and he appears not to have wanted to be overshadowed by his diagnosis.

The past twelve months has seen the Sovereign, embarking on several overseas trips, such as visits to Italy and Canada, and hosting the highest tally of foreign dignitaries to the UK for decades, which included the German president in recent days.

Charity Evening Programme

The upcoming Stand Up to Cancer show on the network, hosted by celebrities including several TV personalities, will appeal to people not to be frightened of getting cancer checks.

The hosts have been affected by cancer - McCall said last month she had had an operation for a tumour, while Clare Balding was treated for thyroid cancer more than 15 years ago. Presenter Adam Hills has previously discussed his parent, who had stomach cancer and then later leukaemia.

The broadcast will reach out to the estimated millions of people in the UK who charities state are not current with public health checks, with an digital tool to let people check if they are able for screenings for breast, bowel and cervical cancer.

In an bid to explain health tests and demonstrate the benefit of prompt detection there will be a real-time transmission from hospital departments at Addenbrooke's and Royal Papworth hospitals in Cambridge.

"The goal is to take the fear surrounding health checks and prove the public that they are not isolated in this," said a presenter.

Understanding Health Checks

At present in the UK, there are several key publicly available checks - for specific cancers - offered to certain age groups.

A recently launched lung cancer screening programme is also being gradually implemented for anyone at potential risk of contracting the illness, specifically targeting people of a certain age, who are smokers or have smoked in the past.

Men may enquire about prostate cancer checks, but there is lacking a standardised service in place.

Charitable Impact

The charity campaign, which has generated £113m since 2012, is supporting dozens of research studies encompassing many patients.

His Majesty, in a address for guests at a gathering for cancer charities in April, had referred to recognising the "intimidating and at times alarming situation" for those diagnosed and their support networks.

But he noted his personal journey of coping with cancer had shown him that "the most difficult times of illness can be illuminated by the greatest compassion," as he commended those who supported those receiving treatment.

Royal representatives has not disclosed the specific type of cancer the King has, or the medical care he has undergone. The King's cancer was identified subsequent to he had received a routine operation.
