Seven alleged members of German left-wing extremist group stand trial over series of violent incidents

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network went on trial on Tuesday, facing charges for violent actions against far-right activists that resulted in the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

Global terrorist designation and legal charges

Earlier this month, the United States designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization along with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany state the network was behind attacks on locations in the country and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some severely injured.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

The trial involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, named as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honor” that attracts rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T., is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis prior to the identical event in 2023.

Historical background and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has long been a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a high-ranking member within the organization, tasked with planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where radical left activists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. At depots overseen by the suspect, the network reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

Another militant previously active with the organization, Lina E., became a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting presumed far-right targets.

The US designation makes group members ineligible to enter the US, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party applauded the US decision and urged the German administration to follow suit. However, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The threat posed by the organization has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and particularly violent members have received convictions or are in custody.”
