Scream OG Star Matthew Lillard Is Anxious He Could Ruin the Series with Scream 7.

The highly anticipated horror film Scream 7 is set to arrive in theaters in the coming year, and it is preparing for a massive gathering of familiar faces. This latest installment signals the iconic comeback of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, after sitting out the previous film. She will, per tradition, be joined by Courtney Cox as journalist Gail Weathers, but they won't be the only fan-favorite characters making a comeback.

"Returning to a role you portrayed in your mid-20s when you're in your fifties was a challenge that kept me up at night," Lillard reveals.

An Unexpected Comeback for Fallon Characters

It has been established that three distinct characters from earlier films are set to return in this new outing, despite meeting their demise in prior movies. The precise method of their return remains a mystery. Fans should prepare for the return of the beloved and nearly unkillable officer Dewey Riley, the director and third film antagonist Roman Bridger, and a member of the first film's killer pair, Stu Macher.

The Pressure of Iconic Legacy

For Matthew Lillard, reprising his role in the franchise for the first occasion since a brief cameo is a dream come true, though he is apprehensive about the audience response. The actor clearly remembers the precise instant he got the news from the series creator.

"I remember the phone call. I remember the pleasantries. I recall him posing the question. That moment is permanently etched on my mind," he says. "So I'm incredibly honored to be back. I'm really excited to be back."

Stu Macher has achieved iconic status in the years since the 1996 movie was released, which left Lillard feeling quite nervous.

"Truthfully, that's a role that is infamous, like it or not," he notes. "A part that is now represented in every single Ghostface mask that walks around every Halloween."

The Anxiety of Disappointing the Fans

Now that production has concluded, Lillard is in the same position like the rest of us to see the finished film. He confesses to feeling immense pressure about not wanting to be the one who damages the popular series.

"The outcome is either a hit and people are excited to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard observes. "At the start, I don't know if the movie's be successful. I am unsure if people want to see me. I've certainly seen enough people come out and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this idea?' So the truth is that I feel a lot of pressure to not ruin the series. I don't want people leaving Scream 7 and thinking, 'Well, that sucked, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"

Speculation and Anticipation Run High

While countless longtime fans are excited for Stu's return, the central mystery of how he and the others come back persists. Maybe they exist rent-free in Sidney's mind, similar to a previous plot device. Or, maybe they are somehow all alive in a bizarre shared situation. The chance of a self-referential story, inspired by earlier horror movies, also exists.
