Prison Surprise: Brazil's Ex-President Bolsonaro Confronts Time in Prison

He contested the legal system and justice won.

A couple of months after getting a twenty-seven-year sentence for trying to “destroy” the nation's democratic institutions, one-time leader Jair Bolsonaro finally looks headed to prison.

Imminent Incarceration

The convicted coup-monger – who's been under house arrest in his mansion while a series of legal procedures and petitions play out – is largely predicted to be jailed in the next few days, amidst mounting speculation that he will be transferred to a well-known high-security facility.

Past Statements on Convicts

Over Bolsonaro’s four-decade time in politics, the far-right former military man exhibited minimal mercy for the country's prison population.

“What’s the need to offer these dirtbags a easy time?” he once mused. “They deserve to be screwed, full-fucking-stop. That's my opinion.”

At another time, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “Should you not wish to wind up in prison, all you have to do is not rape, abduction or theft.”

Incarceration Facility Speculation

However the idea of Bolsonaro himself landing in the Papuda maximum security prison in Brasília has appalled supporters, several of whom this week inspected the prison in an seeming effort to prevent the high court from transferring him there.

Izalci Lucas, a lawmaker from Bolsonaro’s political party who was part of that quartet, stated he anticipated the 70-year-old leader to be imprisoned in the coming fortnight and was concerned his destination could be Papuda.

Lucas claimed Bolsonaro’s severe gut problems – the result of a almost deadly assault during the 2018 presidential political campaign – signified it would be risky to keep the former president there. “His health is very grave. He cannot to manage if they send him to Papuda … It could be terrible,” he commented, who also expressed concern about cramped cells and the standard of jail cuisine.

When inspecting Papuda, Lucas noted witnessing cells containing forty inmates: “It's almost one square metre per detainee.

“We talked to the convicts and they complain, unsurprisingly, of the terrible cuisine,” remarked the senator.

Backers React

The senator isn't the sole person expressing views before the former president’s predicted incarceration.

Authoring in a prominent newspaper, another ally, the former communications minister Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “harsh” end to Bolsonaro’s “spotless” time in office and alleged Brazil was about to experience “the biggest political injustice in its past”.

“It represents an injustice that erodes the hearts of countless of Brazilians,” the former minister said.

Varied Public Opinion

This could be accurate given the significant backing Bolsonaro maintains on the conservative side. But his predicted imprisonment has also pleased the hearts of many others who think he deserves to be jailed for conspiring to stop the incoming president from assuming office – and also conspiring to have him killed.

The lawmaker, a politician for the incumbent leader's Workers’ party, stated: “No one wants Bolsonaro to be put in a hole. Nobody wants Bolsonaro to be placed in segregation. No one desires Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to lie on concrete. We want him to receive proper care – but respectful care in prison. He can’t continue being his personal jailer for his lifetime.”

He observed how Bolsonaro supporters, who have spent years celebrating the tough conditions of inmates, had abruptly woken up to their rights. “Recently has the far-right – which has repeatedly argued that civil liberties were not for offenders – decided to tour a jail to learn what conditions are truly like,” he remarked.

“The former president is a offender,” the congressman maintained, but that did not mean he deserved “degrading, demeaning treatment”.

Potential Incarceration Conditions

Regardless of speculation that Bolsonaro could be moved to Papuda, which now contains about thousands of prisoners, his expected assigned facility seems to be a close penitentiary for law enforcement and other “special” prisoners referred to as Papudinha (Little Papuda).

His potential cell are considerably more pleasant than those in the main prison, although nonetheless a world away from the comfort Bolsonaro enjoyed while occupying the stunning presidential palace, approximately 20 kilometers away.

Based on sources, the cell Bolsonaro could anticipate occupy in Papudinha measures about 24 square meters – about the area of a couple of car spots – and contains a 12 sq metre WC with a shower and a 12 sq metre balcony. “Bolsonaro would be permitted to have a TV and also a small fridge in his cell as long as they were supplied by his loved ones,” information indicated.

Ideological Comments

The lawmaker criticized the talked-about proposal to send the ex-president to Papuda as “a type of payback” on the part of the supreme court judge who oversaw Bolsonaro’s proceedings and will rule on his outcome in the {
