No fewer than 13 passengers lose their lives and 98 wounded in train derailment in Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key government projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” stated the country's president.

The leader announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental vision for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The development of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a notable expansion of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, defying expectations to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled ongoing questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party called for an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This stoppage was suggested pending a full technical review. The party stated that the situation "requires immediate answers."

In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in full compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and management of these vital initiatives.
