Manchester United Poised to Sign German Forward Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants

The Women's Super League club are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from Bayern Munich.

A Marquee Acquisition for the WSL Side

The forward, with six months left on her deal, has been a consistent goalscorer for her club and the national team. She has scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. This signing will be seen as a major signing for the Women’s Super League side.

Departure from Munich was expected after she was seen holding back emotions while applauding the club's supporters following a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

Reports in December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its top strikers. According to reports, all the paperwork for the transfer have now been completed.

Reliable Goal Threat to Strengthen the Attack

The 28-year-old’s arrival should represent a significant uplift to United’s forward line. Schüller has been remarkably consistent with her finishing in the Bundesliga.

  • For seven consecutive seasons, including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
  • She claimed the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Gathering Momentum at Old Trafford

The acquisition of the German international comes at a time when the club appear to be building momentum.

Their recent on-pitch successes include securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen additional activity:

  1. The signing of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
  2. The new deal for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since arriving in 2023.

Regarding the midfielder's extension, a senior figure commented: “She has become a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability allows her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”

Lundkvist, who has joined from a club in the American league, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
