Eurovision Used to Be a Campy Joy – However It Has Transformed Into a Cynical Way to Gloss Over Warfare.

A new initialism came to light a few months following the onset of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Known as WCNSF, it signifies “Injured child with no living relatives”. This term is specific to Gaza, per insights from health professionals including paediatricians. Normally, it is rare for doctors to care for a young patient who has seen the death of their entire family. But, there has been no semblance of normality about the devastating conflict in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been wiped out and the number of children who have lost limbs is greater than that of any other place in the world. Nothing ordinary in scores of doctors arriving back from a sea of ruins with reports of children being systematically aimed at.

A Hell on Earth In Spite Of a Supposed Ceasefire

The Gaza Strip continues to be a profound humanitarian disaster. Critical healthcare resources are being blocked those in need, and groups like Amnesty International contend that genocidal acts are still being committed. Authorities disputes these claims, consistent with how it refutes each claim it is accused of. But while traumatised orphans are now freezing in temporary shelters, there is some ostensibly positive news: apparently nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from advancing its declared purpose of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” Organizers will continue to roll out a welcoming platform for Israel, despite the fact that at least four European countries have now boycotted in dissent. Since this, apparently, is what global togetherness looks like.

Historically, Eurovision prohibited Russia from taking part in 2022 due to the “grave situation in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza appears to be completely different.

A Double Standard

Disregard the reality that Israel was accused of questionable voting tactics last year in what could be seen as an bid to politicise Eurovision. Forget the fact that a three-year-old girl was reportedly killed in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Pay no mind to the evidence that aggression from Israeli settlers and coerced removal in the West Bank have surged. Disregard the condition that global media are still blocked from freely reporting in Gaza. This entire context, apparently, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Contest Continues While Ignoring Unimaginable Suffering

The contest marks seven decades next year – almost double the average life expectancy of a person in Gaza today. The show may go on, but it will never be able to restore the pure, unadulterated fun it historically embodied. A competition that initially championed togetherness has now become a blatant mechanism to whitewash war.
