Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack on an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, located using surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several access tunnels down to the depot... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This action demonstrates the UK's leading role, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

British military aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their bravery," the Defence Secretary commented. "Including them were a great many British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to eliminate militants who endanger our way of life, shows how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."

During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "massive strike" targeting Daesh sites in the country, following an attack killed two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in both countries.
