As per a new book, though, that honor should go to the automated sawmill invented through Dutch inventor Corneliszoon van Uitgeest in 1593.
“Prior to mechanised cutting, building a modest merchant vessel required approximately 10 lumberjacks laboring over three months,” notes Jaime Dávila. “Using wind-driven lumber mills, an identical amount of cut lumber might be manufactured in less than seven days.”
Owing to their rapid mechanical saw, that converted logs into boards with virtually no human effort, Dutch builders could build vessels faster than anyone else, which unleashed one hundred years of Dutch maritime, economic and cultural supremacy in the continent and the globe.
The Original Genuine Industrial Device
The inventor's sawmill, contends Dávila, was “mankind’s initial true industrial machine.” A wind turbine rotated a gear. One component transformed its rotary movement into vertical action for the saw. A separate mechanism transformed that same spinning movement into a sideway’s motion advancing the timber to the cutter. A geared mechanism shifted the log forward one precise increment per stroke.
“Every component seemed simple on its own. Corneliszoon’s brilliance lay in how to combine them in order that the machine operated within a precisely synchronized sequence, sawing on every descending stroke while moving on every upward motion. It was a remarkably clever application of fundamental components.”
