The British tennis star secured the biggest win of his professional journey by coming back from a lost first set to overcome world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz in three hard-fought sets in the early stage of the Paris Masters.

Although he had previously beaten Alcaraz on two occasions, this victory marks Norrie's first ever success over a current world number one.

"Massive. Incredibly significant for me," commented Norrie, who becomes the latest British man in the record books to beat a world No 1. "Bouncing back from injury last year, I fell in the initial match of qualies here. I just sought to enjoy my tennis in the closing months of the year. To get a win like this, it's the most significant victory of my professional life, my initial victory over the global number one and likely the most confident athlete in the tennis scene right now."

Norrie, positioned 31st in the world, also halted Alcaraz's impressive streak of nine straight final appearances and 17 consecutive Masters 1000 wins, which represented the top run of results in the Spaniard's young career.

Match Breakdown

The top seed appeared to be moving confidently to success in the beginning as he cruised in the initial stanza. Yet, Norrie slowly fought his way back into the game by serving with sharper placement and dragging the Spaniard into extended, physical exchanges. His unceasing steadiness and dependability slowly made an impact.

During large parts of the battle, the world number one delivered strong serves but he had difficulty to get his timing right on his baseline shots. The rising talent looked notably uncomfortable hitting his primary weapon, which has been the best shot in the sport for a large part of this season, committing 29 mistakes off the forehand side and a total of 54 errors. Across the net, Norrie offered Alcaraz minimal unforced errors, maintaining his steadiness, fitness and depth the entire contest while delivering effective serves and choosing his moments to force himself inside the baseline and play aggressively.

Career Background

Following struggling for months due to a significant arm issue and challenges with his form, the tennis professional dropped as low as 91st in the rankings this year. Following appearances in the last eight at Wimbledon and the clay-court Grand Slam round of 16 subsequently, this win reinforces the veteran's development as he attempts to return to the elite rankings and beyond. Alcaraz, in spite of his remarkable success, is yet to figure out how to deliver his finest performance indoors.
